Hitters don't swing at every pitch ...no surprise there. If the batter is skilled, the checked swing or no swing is because he has recognized the pitch as one he can't hit well or it won't be in the strike zone. (Modeling from experience.) That's why the late break is so important - to give the batter as little time to read and react as possible.
